Oscar Awards Celebrity Goodie Bags

You can’t help but thumb through the fashion mags after a Hollywood award show to see what the stars wore-the good, the bad and the downright shameful. But one aspect of all the glitz is the goody bags the stars take home. Sure, it may take an entire paycheck (or two or three) to afford just one item from these hush-hush swag bags, but we still want to know what’s in them. What is so intriguing about millionaire celebrities (who could stop working today and still live more comfortably than the general populous)getting free stuff that we’d eat Ramen noodles for a month to own?

Maybe it’s because stars set the trends-and even if you’re not a closet E! News devotee, you’ll run out to buy those hot shades Paris Hilton was photographed wearing. And as much as it pains us to think about the unfairness of it all-stars hold a lot of clout when it comes to product endorsements-the very reason companies load them up with free loot. So, even if you think you’re the most stylish accountant to grace corporate America, thousands of people won’t buy leopard-print pants simply because you wore a pair to the office party.

Okay, so what’s in the bags? It could be a Gaiam’s Organic Spa Experience, complete with European-style glass aromatherapy essential oil diffuser; organic cotton towel; organic cotton robe; soy pillar candle; botanical shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash and cleansing bar; meditation and Yoga CD sets; and a Maize storage chest.

Celebs at the recent Academy Awards took home a Motorola Special Edition Black RAZR V3. in a keepsake and personalized Jonathan Adler box (sorry folks, this tricked out version of the Motorola’s popular mobile is a celebrity exclusive).

How about a two-night stay for two at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley, California valued at $2,500? www.bernardus.com Or a sterling silver choker/braclet/earring set made of pearls and Bali beads by Cathy Jordan?

To keep track of celebrities’ 15 minutes of fame, guests could take home a Fabio Micucci Fabio Micucci (no, not that Fabio) hour glass. And presenters at a past Oscars got a Micucci crystal decanter with a sterling silver stopper (perfect for all those celebrity offspring born with a silver spoon…oh you know what I mean)

It’s a bitter pill to swallow but we both know you’ll be breaking out the Top Ramen (and I’m right along with you).

Exploring Reggaeton Music and Dances

Reggaeton is a type of urban music that has become widespread in popularity among young music lovers in Latin America, North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Reggaeton music originated in Panama and caters to Hispanic youth, with rapping and singing often in Spanish. The music is a blend of Jamaican style music such as dancehall and reggae and Latin America style music such as salsa, bomba, plena, merengue, bachata, hip hop, bolero, R&B, and Latin pop.

Reggaeton music boasts its own specific rhythm and beat. The rhythm of reggaeton is often referred to as “Dem Bow.” The name Dem Bow references the title of a dancehall song from the 1990s by Shabba Ranks. Though the music genre of reggaeton is mostly associated with Puerto Rico (where this style of music was popularized and became famous), the lyrics are more hip hop type lyrics than dancehall.

The Beat of Reggaeton

It’s the reggaeton beat, or Dem Bow, that drives the music and dances. The beat is described as a drum-machine track that originated with Jamaican dancehall rhythm. Reggaeton combines a syncopated snare and steady kick drum to create an unusual rhythm. There’s a 4/4 beat emphasized by the kick drum, and the snare starts with the “and” of the 3rd 8th note and right on the 4th 8th note. There are about 95 beats per minute, and the result is a magnified “boom-ch-boom-chick” sounding beat.

Reggaeton beat sounds are usually synthesized electronically. There are also simple melodies created with electronic instruments, keyboards, and electric guitars. The beats are versatile, and can be based on bolero, hip-hop, salsa, merengue, bachata, or other similar beats.

The Reggaeton Dance

Sensual (and controversial) dancing can often be seen in reggaeton clubs or on music videos. The perreo type dance is a form of grinding dance derived from Puerto Rico. The dance puts women in control of the dance and is very provocative in its nature. Perreo moves are popular in dancehall, rhythm and blues, and hip-hop music as well. A slightly calmer form of reggaeton dancing is cumbia, which was originally a folk dance and music from Colombia. Like perreo, the cumbia dance is flirtatious in nature with the women luring the men toward them and then pushing them away.

Some of the leading artists in reggaeton include CandyMan, Esko, Fito Blanko, Nicky Jam, La Fabrica, Don Miguelo, Daddy Yankee, De la Ghetto, DJ Blass, Baby Rasta & Gringo, Don Chezina, Lito & Polaco, Eddie Dee, Adassa, El Chombo, and Tony Touch. Some popular producers of reggaeton music are Eliel, Luny Tunes, and Noriega.

With the widespread popularity of reggaeton music, there are now many radio stations specializing in this type of music. There are also online radio venues where fans can download music, listen online, or watch the reggaeton music video of choice. The major benefit of online radio is fans can listen to their favorite music or watch their favorite videos around the clock.

The Celebrities Of Pirates Of The Caribbean

For those of you who haven’t seen Pirates Of The Caribbean, you should. For those of you who have, we’re going to take a look at the performances of the the actors / celebrities that made the movie what it is.

Jack Sparrow – Johnny Depp

Jack Sparrow himself could be ranked among the celebrities of Hollywood. Johnny Depp so masterfully and realistically created his character that Capt Sparrow has taken on a life of his own.

Truly, the playing of Capt. Jack has added a feather to Johnny Depp’s hat. Johnny’s performance could categorized into several categories – the persona of Captain Jack, the action, and the script. Mr. Depp did a stellar job in all three areas, even helping out with the script. All of the “eunuch lines” were Johnny’s invention – a brilliant invention if the number of times they have been quoted by fans is any measurement of success!

Elizabeth Swann – Kiera Knightley

In playing Ms. Swann, Kiera successfully balances a mixture of action, romance, feminine appeal, and tomboyish toughness into the character we know as Elizabeth Swann.

Of course, when we first meet with the grown up Elizabeth, she is a not-quite-proper daughter of the English governor. By the end of the movie, she has been a lover, pirate, warrior, marooned beauty, etc. Kiera even does some of her own stunt work, certainly giving her a higher place in the class of Hollywood Celebrities.

Will Turner – Orlando Bloom

Of course we could never forget the young, dashing idealist, Will Turner. Will is a self disciplined, blacksmith and warrior, who falls in love with Elizabeth Swann, defying class and social lines. The way Orlando Bloom plays Will reminds me in many ways of Legolas, from Lord Of The Rings. Both are earnest, attractive young gentlemen with great skills in fighting. And of course, the both use their skills to save lives.

Invite A Best-Selling Author To Your Book Club

In an attempt to provide readers with a unique and compelling experience, author John Shors is making unheard-of efforts to connect with book clubs across the country. Shors is the author of “Beneath a Marble Sky,” a work of historical fiction based on the remarkable story behind the Taj Mahal’s creation. “Beneath a Marble Sky” has been hailed by book reviewers as a “work of art,” is being made into a major motion picture by Hollywood and won a “Book of the Year” award from ForeWord magazine.

For the past two years, Shors has been asking book clubs across the country to invite him to participate in their meetings. By his count, he’s spoken (via speakerphone) with about 200 book clubs. Says Shors, “I grew up reading several books a week and after finishing many works wanted to ask the author questions. Unfortunately, I only had a few such conversations, usually at a book signing with a roomful of strangers. Feeling that readers deserved more, I promised myself that if I ever had a novel published that I would go to great lengths to connect with readers.”

“Beneath a Marble Sky” was published as a hardcover in 2004. As his book hit best-seller lists, Shors created his book club program, through which he called into book clubs across America. Clubs needed to simply contact him in advance and have a speakerphone handy. Shors promoted his program via his Web site (www.beneathamarblesky.com) and was soon chatting with several book clubs a week.

“My book club program has been extremely enjoyable, both for me and readers,” Shors says. “Readers are able to ask me any sort of question about my novel, the publishing industry or the process of turning ‘Beneath a Marble Sky’ into a major motion picture. They get to talk with me among their friends and in a manner that is extremely casual and open-ended. Most every group, as our call winds down, tells me that this has been their all-time favorite discussion.”
